How do you do an MLM and not annoy people?

I was introduced to what I feel is a great business. As a professional, I have a lot of clout, but don't want to abuse that and I also do not want to annoy people either. How can I make money in an MLM without driving people away from me. I hesitate to talk to neighbors, but I know that is who they tell you to talk to. Look, you can find almost any person to poo poo any idea to make money, it wont work, its a scam, it is futile, whatever, I am not taking a survey, just looking for ideas because I am an entrepreneur at heart and honestly care more about what my kids and wife think (ie, not having enough for a good college, nice house, stable future, low debt) than what others think and than what I may not "like" to do.
